Train tracks cut through environments, fragmenting the area. The constant noise, vibrations, and exhaust emissions can negatively affect the wildlife residing in surrounding regions.

Trains can enable the transport of fossil fuels or hazardous waste materials. Activists have even protested fossil fuel extraction by targeting trains: groups of environmentalists have obstructed train tracks that carry coal from open pit mines.
