How are stained glass windows made?

Stained glass windows begin with drawings called cartoons. An artist draws a picture of the image that they want on the glass and this image is used to create a framework out of lead. The pieces of glass are chosen and cut and bevelled. The pieces are placed in the lead frame and then they are welded to make sure the pieces are secure. A pasty substance is used to reinforce the joints and then the completed piece is mounted in a frame.
