How are snowflake chemistry and ozone depletion connected?

    The complex crystal formation that is key in snowflake formation had ozone reducing properties for ground level ozone.  As the thin layer of water on a snow flake’s surface crystalizes and branches, they produce compounds that have been found to reduce the amount of ground level ozone.  The more complex crystal formation the flake has, the more surface area available for the formation of these compounds and the faster the rate of reaction for ozone reduction.
