Snow crystals form from water vapor condensing in cold temperature and slowly freezing. This is not to be confused with snowflakes, which are collections of crystal, or sleet, which is frozen rain. Snowflakes form their complex structures because the base particle that forms it is a hexagonal lattice. These lattices build upon one another in a pattern that eventually creates the wonderfully complex snowflakes that we have come to know. See the citation for more information about the science behind it.
