How are salt flats produced?

Salt flats, such as those found in Death Valley or in Bonneville, Utah, require three basic characteristics. A source of salt is needed, which is typically a water drainage system. Also, the water usually has no output, which means the salt present in the water will not be washed away. Also, a dry, arid climate is necessary to evaporate the water and leave salt and silt behind.
