Rocks are divided into 3 types that are classified by how they were formed.
Igneous rocks form when molten lava (magma) cools and turn to solid rock. Examples are obsidian. The 2nd type is Sedimentary rocks which are formed by deposition and consolidation of mineral and organic material and from precipitation of minerals from solution. Examples are sandstone and shale. Metamorphic rocks are rocks that have changed, such as igneous or sedimentary rocks that have been transformed by great heat or pressure. Example is slate which is transformed shale.
