As of 2010, prototypes for such robots had been invented. This robot can move along power lines on specially designed rollers, using its sensors to detect places where cable repair is necessary and taking pictures with sophisticated cameras to locate places where trees needed trimming. Putting this robot in operation is expected to cost less money than funding human workers for these same tasks. Full trials are set for 2014.
