Rivers are dependent on the rain or snowfall that provides them with water. Global climate change will mean more precipitation in some locations, less in others, and general melting of ice. Researchers predict that by the end of the 21st century, rivers in Europe, Northern Africa, the Midwest, and Northern South America will have significant reductions in flow due to lower annual precipitation. They also expect heavy increases in flow in West Africa, Northern China, and the boreal regions.
