         In the late nineteenth century, Irish scientist Richard Dixon Oldham determined that the earth’s core was molten by studying P and S waves. P waves can move through liquids, but S waves can’t. Oldham noticed that P waves could be measured much farther from an earthquake’s epicenter than an S wave could.
