The poachers who are breaking into zoos to kill animals are targeting zoos with less security. Recent killings of tigers in Indonesian zoos demonstrate that the poachers carefully research zoo security. They drug the animals before breaking into their enclosures. In the case of Sheila, an extremely rare Sumatran tiger who was recently poached in a Jambi zoo, the poachers were very experienced and attracted no attention by staying within the enclosure and taking most of the animal’s body, even its blood. This represents a frightening new trend for targeting some of the most endangered species in captivity.
