How are penguins and sea lions helping scientists chart unknown waters?

A team of 25 scientists working over a period of 10 years have been able to map the Patagonian Sea by attaching satellite transmitters to penguins, albatrosses, sea lions, and other animals. The 16 species of animals produced about 280,000 uplinks of data that were synthesized into a comprehensive atlas, including important migratory paths along coastlines as well as deep-sea feeding areas.  The Patagonian Sea ranges from southern Brazil to southern Chile.  This map, basically written by the sea’s denizens themselves, will be a crucial tool in future conservation efforts.
