Many birds lose their feathers in a process called molting. Peacocks will often molt in August, after the mating season, and then regrow the feathers in the Spring.
Peacocks often molt in the summer, after the breeding season when they are the least susceptible to being cold. In many countries people wait for this season so that they can gather the feathers, which is a valuable product. Gathers tend to go for the male’s long tail feathers which are colorful and often have an image on them similar to an eye. About 150 of these feathers can be gathered from a single male peacock.
