There are probably too many ways for me to answer. The majority of efforts in developing countries include education and water sanitation efforts. A couple good places (from the United Nations) to learn about more of this are linked below. I do know as we move forward into the 21st century, water is being looked at as one our most valuable resources. And one promising effort using UV light to kill organisms and bacteria in the water in an inexpensive manner is being developed in India. I think the Steri-pen uses the same technology.
