How are the Omnitrans bus lines in Southern California better for the environment?

Omnitrans was the first public transportation company to have an electric/gasoline hybrid bus.  The bus was a first becuase it combined unleaded gasoline with electricity, which is supposed to reduce smog emissions.  The impact of replacing a normal diesel bus with this hybrid bus is the same as getting rid of 200 cars.

The bus produces no measurable particulate matter and a little over 1/10 the NOx emissions of a diesel bus.  If Omnitrans can replace its whole fleet with these hybrids, it will make a big difference.

Additionally, public transportation is always better for the environment.
