How are microbes used to clean oil spills?

This is the process of bioremediation. Bioremediation involves using microbes to “return environments altered by contaminants to their original conditions”. For oil spills this can be done by, the addition of nutrients to the environment to facilitate the decomposition of oil by specific bacteria or the introduction of oil-eating bacteria.
