How are metro stations in Paris being used to produce heat for residences?

Because the metro stations see lots of people traveling through them and also have large machines (the trains) generating heat, by building directly above the station and using a series of heat exchangers and pipes, the metro station can be used to help heat the residences above. A heat exchanger works by using a medium (such as water) to heat up from some source (in this case, the metro station). The warmed up water is then pumped up into the housing units above, where the heated medium can then release the heat into the building.
