Man made lakes are made by damming a stream and allowing the water to fill up a basin. Sides may be dug out and natural features removed (or moved) to accommodate an ideal sized or shaped lake. If there is not a stream running through the area where a lake is desired, an area will be dug out then simply filled with water. However, if this second type of man made lake has no incoming water, water may need to be added periodically.
