Volcanic activity is indeed a very common origin for ocean islands. Islands can also form when sea levels rise and cut off areas of higher elevation from one another, or when tectonic shifts cause a chunk of land to drift away from the mainland. These are a few of the more common methods of island formation — for a full overview, check out the citation.
