How are ice cores and tree rings similar?

The ways we use them are actually very similar. Trees grow concentric rings for each year they live and the thickness and color of those rings can give us information about the climate conditions for that year. Similarly, ice cores are made from layers of ice that accumulate over time, and their composition gives clues about the climate as well.
