Industrial pollution has many negative health effects on human populations. Industrial pollution is destructive to water sources because industrial businesses require large quantities of water to power their plants, and return the water to its source in a degraded (dirtier) state. Industrial pollution also releases a lot of harmful chemicals in the air, including greenhouse gases, heavy metals, and organic pollutants. These elements can exacerbate asthma and other respiratory conditions and in some cases, cause them. Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides are commonly released and are the cause of acid rain. Industrial pollution also contaminates land, which can leach into groundwater and make it difficult to build in surrounding areas or on the same land in the future.
