Simply put they are degraded by the ravishes of time. “How long a herbicide persists is dependent on several factors including light, temperature, and soil moisture. Herbicides dissipate via several pathways including: photodegradation, chemical degradation, microbial degradation, leaching, and volatilization.” Something to keep in mind though, its degradation is slowed or stopped by a soil pH higher than 7.
