Green cleaning products use biodegradable, nontoxic, plant and mineral-based ingredients rather than petroleum. Also, they are usually not tested on animals. For example, GreenWorks by Clorox uses ingredients such as lemon oil, ethanol, and glycerine.
Green cleaning products are designed in conjunction with guidelines from the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) Design for the Environment (DfE) branch. DfE provides formulators with information on chemical characteristics and toxicities of raw materials and additives, safer substitutes for chemicals of concern, and innovative new chemistries. The DfE document “Criteria for Safer Cleaning Products (CSCP) in the form of a Standard” describes the program’s unique approach to product review and formulation improvement. This review considers packaging materials as well as ingredient formulas.

Additional green cleaning products considerations include:
recyclability, packaging weight, reusability, and compostability
