How are global warming and energy connected?

Most of the energy we use in the United States is created through the burning of fossil fuels (petroleum for cars, coal for electricity). The burning of these fuels releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide, one of the worst greenhouse gases. The CO2 then traps heat in the atmosphere and contributes to the global warming effect.
