Most of the energy we use in the United States is created through the burning of fossil fuels (petroleum for cars, coal for electricity). The burning of these fuels releases a huge amount of carbon dioxide, one of the worst greenhouse gases. The CO2 then traps heat in the atmosphere and contributes to the global warming effect.
