Fertilizers are bad for the environment because their production process creates huge amounts of greenhouse gases and contributes to global warming because of the emissions. Fertilizer also contains nitrogen, which is good for plants but becomes a pollutant when it gets swept into water sources via runoff, which is quite common. Lakes become super productive with extra nitrogen and produce algae growths that kill the water, depleting it of its oxygen. The Gulf of Mexico has a lot of dead zones because of run off from the Mississippi river. In human health fertilizers can also contribute to increased risk of leukimia, asthma allergies, birth defects, and fertility problems.
