In the book Biomimicry by Janine Benyus I read about research being done to make crops perennials that grow together in a natural system, similar to grasslands. Crops would grow with other species rather than in a plot of a single species, which makes them naturally pest resistant. Pests and insects like fields where they are fed the crop they want (corn for example) in a plentiful supply, which is why farmers have had to use pesticides in the first place. This research seeks to eliminate this condition naturally.
