Smart grids are gaining popularity for their supposed ability to create a more consumer friendly, efficient, and secure energy grid. For one example, the smart grid will be able to allow generation of power from small sources (such as a home’s solar array) to add power to the grid and provide the customer with credit for the power supplied. Similarly, the smart grid will allow appliances to choose when they want to run, based on when energy is in the lowest demand and therefore lowest cost.
