Craters are formed by meteorites impacting the earth. Most meteorites burn up in the atmosphere, but some are big enough that they can still strike the ground. This hard, fast impact leaves a crater. Craters also form on the moon and Mars, perhaps moreso than on Earth because Earth has the benefit of a protective atmosphere.
