How are the conditions different for free-range chickens vs. factory chickens?

What free range actually means can depend on the farmer, but in order to get free-range certification from the US Department of Agriculture Food Safety and Inspection Service, the chickens must have access to the outside. That can mean dirt or gravel, not just pasture. However, if practiced properly, animals are happier.
