Children that have exposure to high levels of traffic pollution are 6 times more likely to get peristent wheezing by age 3 than children who are not exposed.  Traffic pollution negatively affects lung growth rates.  Causal associations have been made between asthma and living close to traffic.  One study found a 10-20% increase in low birth weights in babies whose mothers were exposed to high levels of traffic pollution.
