Cars run on gasoline, which is high in carbon. When you burn gasoline, you release this carbon into the air in the form of Carbon Dioxide, or CO2. Carbon Dioxide is what is known as a “greenhouse gas.” Greenhouses are glass houses built by botanists (people who grow plants) which keep heat levels high. Carbon dioxide gets this nickname because it traps heat on the surface of the planet. There are lots of different types of greenhouse gases, including methane and water vapor! (water vapor is one of the primary culprits in actual greenhouses for keeping the temperature high inside) So, that is how cars contribute to climate change.
