You should read up on LEED building certification. Some of the things builders are doing are maximizing use of natural light, choosing sites that have already been built on previously, and making buildings energy and water efficient. They can also choose to use materials that are recycled or taken from old buildings that have been destroyed.
To add, they are also learning how to incorporate renewable energy into their design process. For instance, if you want to put solar panels on the roof they need to go on the south facing roof, with a 30 degree tilt and free of shade. So the architect would need to design the south facing roof preferable facing the back (some Homeowner’s Associations do allow the panels to be visible from the street).
