Bioaccumulation refers to the concentration of a chemical over time in an organism, reaching a higher concentration than the chemical would in the environment. Since the compounds are metabolized inside the organism that means the concentration is increasing. When an animal eats that organism it ingests the compound as well and starts to metabolize it. As the compound moves higher in the food chain it becomes more concentrated so for animals at the top of the food chain they are being affected the most by the chemical ingested.
