There are many connections between climate change and US national security, but perhaps the largest is the switch from fossil fuels to renewable energy. Some people think the primary reason for the war in Iraq was for a stable oil supply. Certainly, the fact that most fossil fuels are in the Middle East is the reason we have such a delicate political situation with the area. However, if we switch entirely from fossil fuels to renewable energies like solar and wind – all of which we can get domestically – we won’t be in nearly as precarious of a position with the Middle East. What this means for terrorism and other areas of the world is far too complex for me to analyze here. Nevertheless, it seems clear that by countering climate change with renewable energy our security situation will also be improved.
