Airlines are attempting to cut emissions both from their planes in the air and vehicles on the ground by updating equipment to more fuel efficient and cleaner running options. Continental, for example, has spent $16 billion on more fuel efficient aircraft while installing winglets on existing planes to increase their fuel efficiency. American Airlines has also switched over to planes that are 28% more fuel efficient than those they are replacing. In addition, many airlines offer passengers the opportunity to offset their carbon footprints from traveling by investing in forest conservation programs.
