How and why do people move rivers?

People move rivers primarily to provide water for areas that need it. This can be accomplished by constructing dams to stop the flow of water, diverting it to canals designed to handle the river’s new direction. In one prominent example, China rerouted the Yellow River for the 2008 Summer Olympic Games in Beijing to provide the normally dry city with a plentiful supply of water.
