The Amtrak high speed rail system began as a project linking many New England locations together via the rail system, and has since opened. Plans for more high speed rail systems are either underway and in the planning process for Amtrak, spreading its construction plans to the Midwestern states. Below is an article stating that a rail line running from Milwaukee to Chicago, though temporarily halted, is set to be built. I can only imagine that in the next decade or so, most if not all train lines will be upgraded to efficient high speed rail lines that run on electricity instead of diesel fuel.
