The Hoover Dam is one of the most popular national park areas in the U.S., and the only dam sought out so frequently as a tourist destination. The reason is that U.S. route 93, which is a main thoroughfare between Phoenix and Las Vegas, runs across its top. The dam sits on the border of Nevada and Arizona, 25 miles east of Las Vegas.
The Hoover Dam is visited by an estimated 4,000 visitors per day. It is one of the main attractions to people visiting Las Vegas, one of the top three visited US cities. Between 1.2 and 1.4 million people take the tour of the dam, but uncounted numbers simply drive across. The nearest in comparison is the newly completed Three Gorges Dam, which also sees close to a million visitors but has been closed on and off since its opening.
