Hoe eco-friendly is the gas emanating from soak away pits?

A soak away pit is a system for percolating waste water into the soil. So, beyond air bubbles (displaced from underground by the water), any gases would be the same as those from the waste water itself – which could range from methane to other things.

This is essentially a simple septic system without multiple tanks, so anything coming off would be similar to the emanations from a septic drain field, and a properly designed soak away pit (in proper kinds of soils and substrates) is a good way of dealing with waste.
