In a few ways artificial turf on sports fields is better for the environment than natural grass. Grass takes large quantities of water and fertilizer to keep as green and lush as is desired on a professional field. There are also so many amateur sports complexes. If they were all made of an eco-friendly artificial turf, millions of gallons of water could be saved. There are an estimated 32 million of acres of grass in the US alone. It is actually the largest irrigated crop in the US, and people don’t eat it. The newest artificial turfs are much more aesthetically pleasing than the old AstroTurf as was famously in the Astrodome.
