Though CFCs have been pretty successfully phased out, ozone depletion still occurs. Today the largest contributor to ozone depletion is nitrous oxide, a gas that is released from fertilizers and other industrial processes. The NOAA found that nitrous oxide erodes the ozone layer and will continue to do so for many decades. Ironically, nitrous oxide is also a greenhouse gas, so the benefits of cutting these emissions are twofold.
