Trees may be protected by preservation orders by local planning authorities. All types are able to be protected, including hedgerow trees, but not hedges, bushes, or shrubs. If someone wants to protect a specific group/tree, they must submit their request to the local council. If the council chooses, it may create an order which is effective immediately and will continue for six months, or until it is confirmed, whichever comes first. The council can also modify the request – for example, to exclude some of the trees.
