One of the most important things we learned form climategate is not to trust purely in the peer review system, although this truly was not news to anyone who has worked or studied th escientific industry. However, many scientists were unaware how easy it was to fall into the trap of presenting bad evidence even with good methods due to oversights from peers who wanted it to appear true. Hopefully, this will spur a full overhaul, giving us an even better system for testing hypothesi, but only time will tell.
I hope this helped!
It also displayed a lack of transparency to the public as well as the distance of science to them. Scientists should make more of an effort to reach out to people, to present the facts and criticisms clearly and openly. I sincerely believe that people would be more open to the idea of climate change and other environmental issues if there was a serious PR campaign by climatologists and other environmental scientists.
