I don’t believe so. The hydroelectric dam proposed on the Xingu, a tributary of the Amazon, was approved in February. A huge amount of controversy was stirred up over its proposition. It does not seem to have moved forward in construction since it was approved. Unfortunately, 70 more dam projects have been proposed, so I doubt this will be the last battle we have to fight against damming the Amazon.
The Brasilian government has approved the building of the Belo Monte dam on the Xingu river in the Amazon state. This dam has been surrounded by tons for protest from natives in the area and environmentalist, over the damage that will be cause from flooding the rain forest. The dam is set to beginning builidng in 2015 and will cost about $11.4 billion USD and will produce 11gw electricity.
