Yes! To date, 2,239 beaches have been closed because of increased toxicity caused by the BP oil spill. The states hit hardest in terms of overall beach closure are Missisippi, Louisiana, and Florida, with Texas beaches emerging from the oil spill relatively unscathed.

The oil spill off the Gulf coast began on April 20, 2010.  As of July 29, 2010 there have been 2,200 beach closings, according to HuffingtonPost.com.  There have also been health advisories issued by the state or the local authorities.

The average beach closings on a normal year are much lower than this.  Last year there were 273 beach closings.
