Have there been different types of ecosystems in the past that have “gone extinct”?

Ecosystems throughout history were similar to those today, except they had different animals and plants. The difference is that they were in different parts of the world. Over time the continents shift, the climate changes, and ecosystems change as a result. So there were deserts, swamps, forests and all other ecosystems around, just in different places.
