Definitely. The EPA estimates that 0.1%-0.4% of usable surface aquifers are contaminated by landfills. The prominent issue surrounding landfills capability of polluting water sources is through leaching. Leaching is a process where water that is run through a material collects some of that materials toxic elements such as metals or organic chemicals. Water is the ultimate solute and will break down pretty much anything over time. This is a problem because as rain falls on landfills, the water collects toxins off the trash and the toxins are transferred into freshwater sources through runoff.
