Desalination plants can remove the salt from seawater and make it potable (drinkable). About 1,200 de-salting plants are in operation in the U.S., although most of these are used to produce purified industrial water. Desalination plants around the world produce 6 billion gallons of drinking water per day. Large-scale plants are under design in San Diego and Tampa; these plants would provide a significant percentage of each city’s drinking water when in operation.
It seems as though this technology has also been made smaller and more available. There are a number of large conversion projects at plants, but now converters are being made portable.
