In 1991 during the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein purposefully lit the oil wells of Kuwait. This event is considered the largest and most devastating purposeful oil spill in history. His army torched 600 oil wells and dumped over 50 million barrels into the Persian Gulf. The spewing wells and oil in the gulf killed thousands of animals and decimated large amounts of once fertile farmland.
There is also currently an oil spill occurring in the Red Sea off of the Hurghada Coast in Egypt. The Egyptian government is trying to cover it up and say it has been contained, but the Associated Press says it is still leaking and threatening the beaches and coral and killing the animals.
