I’m not sure about production, but people are definitely buying fewer DVDs. Last year DVD sales decreased 13% and not just because of the recession. Movie theater box office was up 10% and video-on-demand use increased 20%.
Movie studios are eager to promote on-demand since they make more profit per rental. There are also environmental benefits since you don’t have to drive anywhere and there is no physical DVD that has to be manufactured.
Yes the online services offered by Netflix and Blockbuster has resulted in a drop in DVD sales. According to an article in Stat Spotting, DVD sales have seen a drop of 20% while a rise of 35% in Netflix subscriptions.
