Have Netflix and other such services greatly reduced greenhouse gases since people might go to the video store less? Has anyone quantified the savings such companies have created in carbon emissions?

It’s interesting because although people don’t have to go to the video store, there is also the cost of paper waste as well as shipping consideration (storing and fuel) to transfer the mail of the DVDs that goes back in forth. Due to their large consumer base, they use a ton of DVDs as well. What’s interesting to note is that Netflix now has on demand available through computers and many video game consoles. That could make the shipping and product side of their ultimately fall by the wayside and could lead to the only consumption being to power the server that keeps those videos on demand.
